After singing 3 services today on our final day at York Minster many of us are now on our way home. A notable organ voluntary from David Whitehead ended a very peaceful Sunday Evensong service following music from Sumsion, W S Lloyd Webber, and Fauré as well as an interesting sermon – subjects today over the three services ranged from doing good and recognizing good in others to the business of professional football!
Thanks to the community at York Minster for providing a wonderful welcome and uplifting services. This picture was taken earlier in the day as you can see from Francis’ darkened spectacles…
Notice also one of this year’s top fans – Jesse prominent at the front. Clearly a future conductor!
We are about halfway through our Summer visit, this year to sing services at York Minster. This evening Friday is the world Premiere of “Our Last Awakening” by Grayston Ives. Its not too late to come along – be there early as it has been full every day so far this week!
Credit to Sigrid (I think!) for the beautifully lit photograph
This year the Choral Festival was hosted by the Anglican Church of St. John & St. Philip The Hague and it took place on June 10th 2017. Our conductor for the day was Lee Dunleavy and our organist was Christina Edelen.
Over 80 singers turned up and we all had a marvellous singing experience that day. To give an impression of the day here are some photos taken by Fiona Middelkoop during the event.
A new link has been posted in the members area to an updated “information for visiting choirs” published by York Minster.

Two weeks ago we announced a new anthem and gave Penny Granger, who commissioned it, the opportunity to tell us more about this commission.
Now we have even more information for you, this time from the composer himself, Bill Ives (a.k.a. Grayston Ives).
Saturday May 7th ECS had our second rehearsal for our week in York. We went through quite a lot of music, some of it well known, some of it new to ECS singers. One particular piece was so new we actually gave it the first sing-through ever at yesterdays rehearsal!
The piece, ‘Our last awakening’, was written by well known singer, choral director and composer Bill Ives, who writes music under the name Grayston Ives.
We will be performing this piece in York and it will be a world premiere, attended D.V. by both the commissioner and the composer. So we will be doing some more rehearsing on it…
If you would like to know more about the piece, read Penny Granger’s story on this commission.
